Project: Basra governorate building competition
Date: 2012
Project size: 40,000 sqm
Client: Basra governorate
Services Provided: Architecture
The concept of the Basra Government Building aims to draw from the root elements of its land, its past and its present. Water flows through the ground floor and main atrium hugging the whole structure, whilst a woven external skin resembles the iconic woven palm trees of the Arab marshland. The bronze and metallic tones blend with the surroundings and the fundamental Islamic geometries become the source of the iconic cube that houses the Governorate. In contrast to these references of the past the huge north facade structure that supports the curtain glass echoes the oil rigs marrying the premise of an amazing future and its cultural heritage.
