Al-Minaa Sports Club is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra, and participates in the Iraq Stars League, the top tier of Iraqi football.
It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League.
AMBS were appointed to act as the Office of Resident Engineers to oversee the construction of their new stadium and act as the Design compliance team, to ensure the stadium met the correct requirements for FIFA and other professional sports bodies.
The design was prepared by 360 Architects and takes references from the areas rich nautical history, making allusions to water and shipping.
Waving sails cascade down the exterior form, while structural beams reflect the rigging of a ship.
The site includes the main 30,000 spectator stadium and two training fields with a 500 and 2000 person capacity. The vision is to increase support, accessibility and involvement in sporting activities. There are plans to connect the stadium to its surrounding landscape with a network of pedestrian-friendly parks.
